The rocket attacks that hit Kiev yesterday took place as the Ukrainian president concluded talks with UN chief António Guterres, according to Volodimir Zelensky. In his usual video message, Zelensky says this move shows “the true nature” of Russia and calls for an “appropriate, strong response”.
The Ukrainian capital came under Russian fire for the first time since mid-April. Several victims were reported to have been killed in the attack on, among other things, a residential complex. According to the Ukrainian president, “the Kremlin wants to humiliate the United Nations – and everything that this organization represents”.
Guterres ‘shocked’
UN chief Guterres said he was “shocked” by the missile strikes. “Not so much because I’m here now, but because Kiev is a holy city for Ukrainians and Russians,” Guterres said.
A spokesman for the UN chief told CBS News that the missiles hit targets not far from the hotel where Guterres is staying.
