The creator of “Godzilla” explained how the monster turned into the main character
In the original 1954 Godzilla Japanese film, the prehistoric mutant reptile awakened at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean is a personification of Japan’s fear of nuclear weapons – the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki happened just nine years ago. Despite this, in the future, kaiju began to live his own life, eventually turning from the enemy of mankind into a heroic character who came to grips with other monsters. About how this transformation took place, said visual effects specialist Teruyoshi Nakano, who worked on numerous Godzilla sequels in the 70s and 80s.
I think that if the essence of Godzilla remained unchanged, this series of films could not continue. If Godzilla was still a villain, I do not exclude that he would be popular only with hardcore fans, while he would not be interested in the general public. So it seems to me that the decision to change the characterization of Godzilla was justified … It was a reaction to modern realities and changes in the public. But personally, I like the scary Godzilla more than the good Godzilla,
