During the pre-show of the American Music Awards, Taylor Swift (31) and Ed Sheeran (30) were already crowned best male and female pop star on Sunday. With that, the singer broke the record for the most AMAs ever won, which was already in her name.
Prior to the official ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, it was also announced that Doja Cat has been awarded at least three times. She won the award for best collaboration for the song ‘Kiss Me More’ with SZA, the award for best R&B album for Planet Her and the award for best female R&B artist. That prize went to The Weeknd for the men.
Some winners were also announced in the hip-hop and country categories before the live broadcast. Megan Thee Stallion won best hip-hop album for ‘Good News’ and the award for best hip-hop artist. Drake ran off with the male counterpart of that last award. Luke Bryan and Carrie Underwood won the Best Country Artist awards.
K-pop group BTS took off on Sunday evening at the presentation of the American Music Awards with the most important prize, the artist of the year. The South Koreans also won best pop group and best pop song awards for their song ‘Butter’.
Olivia Rodrigo picked up the Best New Artist award at the Los Angeles ceremony, and Lil Nas X took home the award for Best Video Clip. The award for best gospel artist went to Kanye West.
Breda DJ Tiësto did not cash in on his nomination for an American Music Awards on Sunday. He lost out to Marshmello in the best dance artist category.
In addition to Tiësto and Marshmello, David Guetta, Illenium and Regard were also nominated in the category. Marshmello also won an American Music Award in 2018 and 2019. Guetta won the award in 2012, when there was a DJ category for the first time. Other winners of the DJ award at the AMAs were Avicii, Calvin Harris and The Chainsmokers.
