Suspect in a violent kidnapping case in Oregon died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being taken into custody by the police following a standoff.
Benjamin Obadiah Foster, 36, was taken into custody in Grants Pass, Oregon, but died at a hospital a few hours later. The police had received credible information that Foster had entered the home where a woman was found unconscious, bound, and near death on Jan. 24. The woman was hospitalized in critical condition.
During the standoff, Foster barricaded himself under a house as officers from multiple agencies attempted to secure his surrender. A shelter-in-place notification was sent to some area residents. Foster was spotted walking a dog in the area the morning of the standoff.
Foster had been on the run after slipping away from a property raid in the unincorporated community of Wolf Creek. Authorities believe that he had help escaping the area.
In 2019, Foster was charged with five felonies, including assault and battery, after holding his then-girlfriend captive in a Las Vegas apartment for two weeks. He later pleaded guilty to one count of battery and received a sentence of up to 2 1/2 years in a Nevada prison. However, due to time served, he only had to serve less than 200 additional days in state custody.
