Colombian singer Shakira has called on the government of her country to invest more in education.
The 41-year-old singer is firmly convinced that better education is the best way to tackle the problems in Colombia. Shakira made the call Friday when she hit the first pile of two schools being built by her foundation in her homeland.
“When some children have less access to training than others, we can not speak of a fair situation, as long as it is not corrected, there can be no question of peace”, says Shakira.
In order to provide the same access to education for poorer children in particular, according to the singer, the government must do more to make education more accessible. The existing educational institutions must also receive better facilities.
The foundation Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet) was founded by Shakira in 1997, when she was only eighteen years old. Since then she has been working for equal opportunities for children, which resulted, among other things, in the construction of four schools in different Colombian cities.
Shakira closes her most recent tour in her homeland. On Saturday she will give a concert in the Colombian capital Bogota.
