The Barbadian singer makes a pronounced statement in her campaign by choosing a model with scars on her face for her clothing line. Unlike other fashion houses, she uses no editing programs and lets the photos speak for themselves. And that gives a lot of praise on social media.
“As a girl with scars, this touches me deeply in my heart”
The model on the massively shared photo is South Sudanese Aweng Mayen Chuol. Photoshop is not used for the photos, which focus on a pair of eye-catching earrings. The scars on her cheek are therefore still clearly visible.
Twitter is lyrical about the RiRi campaign and many fans identify with the model. Someone responds: “As a girl with scars, this touches my heart.” Another writes: “I am so in love. This is real skin now.”

Rihanna’s new Fenty collection shows a model’s visible facial scars, no retouching. I’m so in love. This is real skin. 🙌🏼 pic.twitter.com/TrPW7tS9Yx

Aweng Mayen Chuol has never made a secret of her scars. Earlier she said about this in the British magazine Dazed & Confused: “Sometimes I want to call to everyone that I am more than these scars, but I understand that it is a curiosity. I know that I am different. I know that my face is different looks, but that is what beauty is to me. ”And let Rihanna think the same way.
It is not the first time that the singer uses ‘real’ models. In her campaigns and shows she invariably uses models with an extra size, with freckles, with a slit between the teeth or models that are already old.
