Vernita Lee, the mother of Oprah Winfrey, passed away at the age of 83. That reports the TMZ entertainment site. Lee died on Thanksgiving, her family has confirmed.
Venita Lee was born in 1935 in Mississippi. She married Vernon Winfrey, in 1954 Oprah was born. However, Oprah’s upbringing could not be combined with her work as a housekeeper in Milwaukee; that is why Oprah was brought up by her grandmother. Only when she was six she came to live with her mother again.
Because of this emergency, the relationship between Winfrey and her mother was always ‘shaky’, the TV presenter herself stated. ‘I kept asking myself: what exactly is a mother? How do you feel about such a person if you have not seen her for years? “
During her youth Winfrey was sexually harassed by her cousin and uncle. This created a further gap between the presenter and her mother. Later, however, the two reinstated it. In 1999, Vernita was a guest in Oprah’s talk show, where they talked about their relationship.
Vernita Lee is now buried in a small, intimate meeting.
