After Warner Bros. Discovery decided to shelve Batgirl six months ago, the lead actress, Leslie Grace, has finally addressed the matter. Responding to the studio’s claim that the $90 million movie was “unreleasable,” Grace stated that the cut of the film she saw was “incredible.”
Speaking to Variety, Grace explained that Batgirl was not complete at the time it was tested, and there were missing scenes. Despite this, she still believes that the film had potential. “The film that I got to see – the scenes that were there – was incredible,” Grace told the outlet. “There was definitely potential for a good film, in my opinion. Maybe we’ll get to see clips of it later on.”
In August 2022, several months after the film had wrapped filming, the news was first announced. Although it was originally planned for an HBO Max release, Warner Bros. Discovery decided to cancel the film entirely – just before announcing that they would no longer release movies directly to streaming.
Grace shared that learning that Batgirl would never be released on the big screen was “like deflating a balloon.” “On that day, I was very much just taking it all in, but also so sure of the magic that happened – in my experience and what I saw in my cast, in our team – that I was like, ‘This must be some crazy thing that we have no control over,'” she said.
Grace went on to say, “I tend to be a very optimistic and positive person in these types of circumstances, and I just really leaned on the beauty of the idea that I got to have this experience in my life. Even though I would have loved to share that with the rest of the world, nothing can take that experience away from us.”
Although Grace did not want to raise anyone’s hopes about the potential for Batgirl to make a comeback in the future, she did mention that there have been “conversations.” She said, “We’ll just see where that takes us.”
