Hayao Miyazaki ‘s Japanese film Spirited Away , which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003, is getting a theater version.
Studio Ghibli, who produced the film, is fully cooperating with the play , according to The Hollywood Reporter .
The stage version is set to premiere in Tokyo in February 2022 and will be written and directed by John Caird, who previously worked on Les Misérables, Nicholas Nickleby and Daddy Long Legs .
“Hayao and I love John’s vision, we can trust him,” said Miyazaki’s partner Toshio Suzuki in a comment. “I’m curious how this project will develop under his wing.”
Spirited Away premiered in 2001 and grossed $ 355 million (over € 290 million) worldwide, as well as worldwide recognition for hand-drawn Japanese anime. The story is about ten-year-old Chihiro, who moves with her parents and ends up in a mysterious world full of ghosts.
