Sean Connery has died at the age of ninety, the BBC reports Saturday. The Scottish actor was best known as James Bond’s first interpreter. He played the secret agent in seven movies.

According to the BBC , he had been unwell for some time and died in his sleep. Since his retirement in 2006, Connery has lived on New Providence, the main island of the Bahamas.

Connery was one of the most famous actors in the world for more than half a century. His breakthrough came in 1962 with the first Bond film, Dr. No .

He played the secret agent six times and came back in 1983 as ‘007’ in Never Say Never Again , an unofficial Bond film from a competing film company.

Connery also had roles in Murder on the Orient Express (1974), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990) and The Rock (1996), among others. The last film he appeared in was 2003’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen .

Connery was knighted by the British Queen Elizabeth in 1999. Since 1975 he was married to his second wife, Micheline Roquebrune. With his first wife, Diane Cilento, he had a son in 1963: Jason Connery.
