An individual armed with an AR-15-style rifle was killed by law enforcement after firing in a Target store in Nebraska, according to authorities.
Police reported no harm to employees or shoppers at the Omaha store during the incident.
The Omaha Police Department responded to multiple reports of an active shooter at the west Omaha Target around noon on Tuesday.
During a press briefing, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer stated that upon arriving, officers entered the building, encountered the suspect and shot him dead.
The individual, a white man believed to be in his 30s, was declared dead on the spot.
The police chief stated that the suspect entered the store with a gun and a significant amount of ammunition and started shooting. Police received over two dozen emergency calls and discovered multiple spent cartridges at the scene.
The police department reported that the suspect had 13 magazines loaded with ammunition.
The police chief mentioned that it is currently unclear if the suspect was shooting at anyone.
No harm to civilians was reported after police thoroughly searched the store, according to the chief. A Target representative also confirmed that all customers and staff had safely left the store.
The Omaha police department acknowledged the courage of Target employees who recently received active shooter training and helped customers evacuate the store.
The Target representative stated that the store would remain closed until further notice and that the company is working with the Omaha Police Department to gather more information.
