The battle for best drama includes Elvis, Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick . In addition to The Banshees of Inisherin , the films Triangle of Sadness and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery are also in the running for the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy film. Wednesday, The Crown and Better Call Saul are nominated for best series. Among the actors, Colin Farrell, Daniel Craig, Ralph Fiennes, Austin Butler and Brendan Fraser have been nominated for an award. Michelle Yeoh, Emma Thompson, Margot Robbie, Ana de Armas and Viola Davis are competing for a Golden Globe with the actresses.
This year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement goes to Eddie Murphy, whose appearances include the satirical TV show Saturday Night Live and the films Beverly Hills Cop, The Nutty Professor and 48 Hours . This award is given annually to someone who has made an ‘outstanding contribution’ to the world of film and entertainment. Previously, Tom Hanks, Jane Fonda and Oprah Winfrey, among others, were honored with the special award.
Last year, the film The Power of the Dog was the big winner of the Golden Globes with three silver nominations. The HBO show Succession also won three awards, becoming the most successful series. The winners were announced during a meeting without an audience.
The HFPA, which awards the Golden Globes, came under fire last year because the organization was not diverse enough. Now, according to the HFPA, 52 percent of those eligible to vote are women and a total of 51.5 percent of voters are “racially and ethnically diverse.” This includes Latino, black, Asian and Middle Eastern film professionals and journalists. According to the HFPA, the two hundred voters now also include several people with an LGBTI background.
