Disney is working on a sequel to the live action remake of The Lion King that came out in 2019. Deadline reports on Tuesday that the film will be directed by Barry Jenkins, known for his films Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk.

Jenkins says in a first reaction that it is a dream come true to expand the story of The Lion King together with Disney . He takes over from Jon Favreau, who directed the 2019 version. Jeff Nathanson, who scripted the previous live action remake, is also writing the story for the upcoming film.

According to sources surrounding the film, the film focuses, among other things, on the early years of Mufasa, Simba’s father in the original story.

The live action remake from 2019 with the voices of Donald Glover and Beyoncé raised around 1.4 billion euros worldwide. Two million cinema tickets were sold in the Netherlands in the first four weeks. It is not yet clear when the next part should be released in the cinema.
