‘Bollywood Nightingale’ Lata Mangeshkar dies aged 92

Lata Mangeshkar, one of India’s most influential singers, died on Sunday at the age of 92 in Mumbai. The Guardian reported this on Sunday. Mangeshkar has been featured in hundreds of Bollywood movies.

 

The singer will be given a state funeral in Mumbai and a period of national mourning has been declared, Asian News International reported . Flags will be flown at half mast across the country. Mangeshkar ended up in hospital last month after testing positive for the coronavirus.

“She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tribute to the ‘nightingale of Bollywood’. “Generations to come will remember her as a loyal and hardworking icon of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to enchant people.”

President Ram Nath Kovind called the news “heartbreaking” and described Mangeshkar as “an exceptional person full of warmth”.

Over 30,000 songs in 36 languages

Mangeshkar started singing when she was five and received singing lessons from her father, who worked in the theater. Her breakthrough came in 1949 with the song Aayega Aanewala from the movie Mahal .

After that, she was a welcome guest in Bollywood movies. Her work in the Indian film industry made her a national icon throughout her career, which lasted 73 years. Mangeshkar has sung in more than a thousand films and has also recorded his own albums.

Although she did not finish school, she was fluent in several languages. Her oeuvre comprises more than 30,000 songs in 36 languages, including Dutch, English, Russian and Swahili.

“The subcontinent has lost one of the truly great singers the world has known,” Prime Minister Imran Khan said.
