Following an impressive decade-long run, the renowned pop icon will bring his record-breaking series of shows at New York City’s iconic concert venue to a close, culminating in 10 final performances.
In a joint announcement, Billy Joel and Madison Square Garden revealed that the legendary singer’s residency will conclude next year, exactly a decade after its inception.
The grand finale of Joel’s Madison Square Garden residency is scheduled for July 2024, marking his remarkable 150th performance at the venue.
Expressing his amazement at the longevity of the residency, Joel stated, “I’m kind of flabbergasted that it lasted as long as it did. My team tells me that we could continue to sell tickets, but 10 years, 150 shows — all right already! I do remember the first time we played Madison Square Garden, it was the pinnacle of my career… It’s hard to end, even at 150 lifetime shows. I just want to thank everyone for the wonderful thing that’s happened here.”
Joel’s initial performance at MSG took place on December 14, 1978. In 2006, he set a record for the most consecutive performances by an artist at the venue with 12, a record he surpassed in 2015 with 13 shows. His current residency commenced in 2014, with Joel committed to performing one show per month “as long as the demand continues.”
“Billy Joel’s historic run has made an indelible mark, not just on Madison Square Garden but on the entire music industry,” commented James L. Dolan, Chief of MSG Entertainment. “Achieving 150 sold-out shows is an extraordinary accomplishment that speaks to Billy’s unmatched talent, his beloved catalog, and his dedicated fanbase. While the residency may be ending after his 150th performance, Billy will always have a home here at MSG.”
The first of Joel’s ten farewell shows at MSG is slated for October 20, but fans can still catch him on his national tour with Stevie Nicks, scheduled for June, August, and September.
