Billy Porter makes his directorial debut with the coming-of-age drama What If? Variety reports Wednesday. The feature film is about high school student Khal, who falls in love with a transgender girl at his school.
“I’m thrilled to be a part of this new place in Hollywood, telling all kinds of stories from different people,” said Porter.
“I am grateful to be in a position to make some of these stories more mainstream.”
In What If? Khal shares on social media that he is in love with a transgender girl at his school. The internet encourages him to go for it and the two get into a relationship, which neither of them expected. The film is being produced by Killer Films and Andrew Lauren Productions.
Porter won an Emmy in 2019 for his performance in Pose. He landed the role of Lola in the Broadway musical Kinky Boots , for which he won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards, as well as the Grammy for the album. The actor takes on the role of fairy godmother in the film adaptation of the fairy tale Cinderella .
