Renowned soap opera actor David Gail, best known for his portrayal of Dr. Joe Scanlon on the General Hospital spinoff Port Charles, passed away at the age of 58 due to complications from sudden cardiac arrest. The tragic news was confirmed by his publicist, Linda Brown, who provided details on the circumstances leading to Gail’s demise.

Emergency personnel discovered Gail unresponsive, prompting immediate life-saving measures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation. Despite their efforts, Gail was placed on life support for several days, ultimately succumbing to the cardiac event on January 16, 2024. Brown emphasized that the family has no reason to suspect any cause other than heart failure.
In a heartfelt statement, Brown expressed, “David will be remembered for his love of acting and his absolute passion and dedication to his friends and family. He possessed a unique quality that made everyone feel special in his presence.”

David Gail, originally from Tampa, Florida, transitioned from a career in finance to pursue acting. Apart from his notable role in Port Charles, he appeared in TV shows such as 90210, Robin’s Hoods, Savannah, The Round Table, Matlock, and JAG. His film credits include starring alongside Bradley Cooper in the 2002 film Bending All The Rules.
