The popular series The Flintstones will be continued, entertainment site Variety reports Tuesday. It will be an animated version that will be shown at Fox in the United States.
After earlier attempts were made to have Fred and Wilma Flintstone and Barney and Betty Rubble return to television, this time it seems to work. Actress Elizabeth Banks acts as executive producer and also voices the character of Pebbles, the daughter of Fred and Wilma.
The show, which will be titled Bedrock , is set in a later period than the original series. Fred is about to retire, while Pebbles in his twenties focuses on her own career.
Fox president Michael Thorn is happy with the new series. “Even before the Simpsons, Griffins and Belchers came along, The Flintstones were a part of our lives. They are the first family of animation and they are absolutely going to rock.”
The original series ran for six seasons from 1960 to 1966 and has been repeated worldwide for years. It was the first animation show to win an Emmy Award.
It is not yet known when Bedrock will be shown for the first time.
An animated sequel series to ‘THE FLINTSTONES’ is in the works at Fox.
